Retro Remnant Jacket

Pattern: self-drafted from Vogue's Anna Sui Misses/Misses' Petite Dress and Slip #V1177
Fabric: remnant stretch wool blend from my coat
Cost: free

My mom gifted me this beautiful stretch wool for my new coat. She was absolutely in love with the fabric, especially the way it streeetches. When I saw that I had a little less than a yard left, the idea for this retro swing jacket came to mind as a 'thank you' for the beautiful wool. It is based on a jacket I already own, and drafted off an Anna Sui dress pattern that had a similar yoke and was made for wovens.

To draft the pattern, I started with the pattern pieces from Vogue's Anna Sui dress. I liked how the body gathers into the yoke of the dress, but don't like dealing with all the pieces of a Vogue pattern (remember: I was dealing with just a remnant of fabric). I simplified the yoke by combining it into one piece, removing the upper pleats. I also did the same with the sleeves. For the body, I gathered the pleats instead of pleating them. Finally, I added a collar. The result was a very simple and cute jacket.

The jacket has gotten me in the mood to make more! I'm working on a wool pullover and bought some velvet for a motorcycle jacket...

  2. Nice. Can you elaborate a little on the drafting part? I.e. did you re-do anything from scratch? Did you use any pre-existing clothing to modify it etc?
